BOURNVITA CAKE | COCOA BURFI

Last week when I saw the Bournvitas on sale at an Indian store, I immediately bought it only to realise later that they are nearing expiry date.Except for my daughter nobody loves chocolate milk and it was nearly impossible for me to finish it off within a week.Suddenly I remembered of the Bournvita cake/Burfi which my MIL used to make whenever she prepares ghee at home.

Bournvita Burfi

Ingredients:
All purpose flour: 1 cup
Bournvita: 1/2 cup
Ghee: 1/2 cup
Sugar: 1.5 cups
Water: 1/2 cup
Vanilla extract: 1/2 tsp

Procedure:
  1. Dry roast the all purpose flour for a couple minutes (should not change color)
  2. Add ghee and fry for a few minutes. The maida will be like a paste now
  3. Keep this paste aside
  4. Grease an 8" baking pan with ghee
  5. Boil 2 tablespoons of water and mix the bournvita well and keep this aside
  6. Add 1/2 water and sugar and boil until one string consistency is reached
  7. Add the maida paste and stir well in medium flame
  8. Switch off the flame once the mixture comes off the sides of the pan (The consistency should be semi solid)
  9. Now finally add the bournvita mixture and stir well
  10. Pour this into the greased pan and allow it to cool
  11. While it is still warm, cut it with knife/pizza cutter
Notes:
If the burfi does not start to set within 10 minutes, transfer it again to the pan and cook for some more time
If using pure cocoa powder instead of bournvita, add only 2 tablespoons and also increase the sugar to 2 cups

  5. Nice Burfi!

Once my hubby also spotted some Horlicks bottles on a deal, but luckily he always checks the expiry dates, so we are safe! ;) Otherwise I would have made Horlicks burfies! LOL! :)

    1. If it is still sticky even after cooling, transfer the contents to the wok and cook again until the mixture comes off the sides of the pan.Do not add more maida. That will not work
